The Role of Paper Additives

Author:

In the papermaking industry, many chemical additives for papermaking are often used, with a wide variety of applications and functions mainly reflected in the following aspects:

1) Improve production efficiency.

In order to improve the dehydration speed of the wet end of the paper machine and accelerate the evaporation of dry water, filter aids can be added to improve production efficiency. In order to make the pulp dyed evenly and firmly, mordant and dispersant can be added. When adding rosin sizing agents, adding synergists can improve the sizing effect. Furthermore, recycled waste paper contains ink and other substances, and waste paper deinking agents can be added to produce pure pulp.

2) Improving quality and endowing paper with special properties.

For example, cement bag paper requires high strength and good breathability, and the degree of beating during beating cannot be high. In order to improve the strength of paper, dry strength agents are often added. Napkins and tissues need to be as soft as cotton, and should not be fluffy when wiped. Paper softeners will be added. Rust proof paper treated with rust inhibitors will not corrode the product when used as packaging for metal products.

3) Reduce waste and save on the consumption of raw materials.

For example, adding retention aids and flocculants to pulp can improve the retention rate of fillers and fine fibers, reduce losses, save raw materials, and reduce wastewater pollution.

4) Eliminate production barriers

In summer, mud usually exists in mud tanks, mesh tanks, or white water pipe systems, causing corrosion and hindering production. There are various high-efficiency, low toxicity, and self decomposing preservatives that can sterilize and prevent corrosion without causing pollution.

If the pulp is washed uncleanly and mixed with air, foam and floating pulp will be produced, which is harmful to the quality and operation of paper. In order to eliminate the harm of foam, defoamer and degasifier can be used.

5) Improve production operations

The use of blanket cleaning agents can accelerate the washing of blankets and maintain their cleanliness. Adhesives are usually added to coatings to improve the quality of coated paper. Adding dispersants can reduce the viscosity of coatings, promote production operations, and make coatings uniform. The addition of crosslinking agents can improve the water resistance of the coating.

6. Sizing agent, also known as sizing agent. Sizing refers to a process of applying adhesive to pulp or paper, with the aim of maintaining the dimensional stability of the paper, preventing shrinkage, reducing the water and ink absorption of the paper, improving the smoothness and printing adaptability of the paper, and improving the quality of the paper. This agent is relatively stable and can generally be stable for more than 90 days. Adding it to pulp has a good effect on improving water resistance, softness, printing adaptability, smoothness, etc. It has good compatibility with pulp and can obtain paper with good permeability. Used for sizing paper or paperboard, it can significantly improve the quality of paper and paperboard.

7. Retention aid, used to increase the retention of fillers, fine fibers, sizing agents, etc., reduce their loss, and improve the filtration and dehydration of paper pages; It can also be used as a catcher for "anionic waste". Adding copper mesh outside the paper machine is beneficial for solid-liquid separation, improving paper machine efficiency and reducing production costs. It can also be used as a flocculant for papermaking wastewater.

8. The forming process of wet paper pages is a complex physical and chemical process, and the fibers, fine fibers, interfering substances, fillers, pigments, adhesives, chemical additives, etc. in papermaking ingredients all have complex surface and colloidal chemical properties. Especially the surface chemical phenomena such as charge, specific surface area, and adsorption of papermaking ingredients not only affect the improvement of paper quality level, but also affect the normal operation of the paper machine. Paper mills can generally increase paper strength, increase fine material retention, and improve water filtration performance by adding chemical additives, which are called wet end additives.
